As if Spam (the canned meat, not email) wasn't bad enough, four years ago, I stumbled across Libby's Potted Meat Food Product and couldn't resist looking at what the ingedients were. I was going to copy-paste them into a diary entry when I discovered that a fascinating sub-culture existed surrounding the most aptly named product in America.

| It seems that I wasn't the only one wanting say something about this in a blog. This guy already had - albeit a different brand with completely different ingredients. Considering the list on my can, seeing "beef hearts" in his list made me a bit concerned over what some of the ingredients were.
And if that wasn't enough, so did this guy. I thought a blog entry about the vile substance would be an original thing, but that one even has pictures of an opened can. Ew. At least I know better than to not open the thing.
As I followed this trail of people who beat me to the punch, I discovered there is a Potted Meat Museum where you can browse by meat, or by brand.
I'd hate to be this guy.
As many sites I searched, none of them had the ingredients of same brand I had so, here I go, typing in the ingredients for Libby's Potted Meat Food Product mechanically separated chicken, partially defatted cooked pork fatty tissue, beef tripe, partially defatted cooked beef fatty tissue, vinegar, salt, spices, sugar, flavorings, sodium erythorbate and sodium nitrate *FLAVORINGS??? What the fuck is that? Might it be beef hearts? Pork Brains? I shudder to think.
Here's the Google page I used, and here's the one that shows just the blogs. Enjoy the links. They're bizarre!
(I can't believe there's a sub-culture around this shit.) |
