Death Watch '03: Noel Redding

Death
By Paul Shrug, Section News

Warmest greetings! More death!

Noel Redding, bassist for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, provided me with the difficult and ultimately failed task of finding another euphemism for death rather than "kissed the sky" at age 57.

Redding was overshadowed by the guy who played guitar in the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but played several classic basslines. The one that pops into my head first is "Manic Depression," but in looking back that bassline just mirrored the guitar line, didn't it?

Well, Redding was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and squabbled with the Hendrix estate for his entire life. In 1995 he played a Jimi Hendrix guitar tribute in Seattle. The rest of the time he spent at his home in Ireland.

As a cold-hearted Rolling Stone letter-writer said, I guess this puts the kibosh on a JHE reunion.

Your Hall Monitor of Death says this item is nowhere half as interesting as the news that Elvis Costello is marrying Diana Krall.

Damn it - some really great people are kicking the bucket lately. What a fantastic bassist he was. Those first three Jimi Hendrix albums are just the shit, man. The Shit! And, while Hendrix is undoubtably the star, man, Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell laid down some serious grooves.

I'm sad.

Looks like Noel is really in the Jimi Hendrix Experience now.

BTW...My 200 disc changer on shuffle just did one of the most brilliant segways that I've ever heard. Us DJs are obsolete. "Baby Greaser George" by the Frogs into "Desparado" by the Eagles. That right there was fucked up. And that was all coming out of the Skablins.

I'm off to work. L8R SK8R

Hey look! It's Brooks!
