KBTC 91.7 FM, out of Bates Technical College in Tacoma will from now be known as KXOT 91.7 FM. The station was purchased by Public Radio Capital, whose mission is to "broaden the reach of public radio to millions of listeners in America. PRC helps public broadcasters purchase and protect radio broadcast channels so they can be made public radio stations." They also "work to broaden the reach of public radio nationwide through partnerships with educational institutions and public broadcasters." The PRC has made an agreement with KEXP in Seattle, which is based out of the University of Washington, that KEXP programming will from now on be broadcast on KXOT. KEXP is now expanding its reach into an area which has been the territory of KAOS, in terms of community/public radio for thirty years.

Ok, it's wednesday, we've got drunk nuns, paramedics fondling corpses, ironic tragedies, a damp wet moist Paris Hilton (that should be good for a few 1000 hits on Google), another reason not to eat at McDonalds, and more inside.

Hear ye, hear ye. I completely despise the modern betrothal-and-wedding system in the good old USA. The ridiculous over-the-top weddings, the pressure on men to spend thousands of dollars on tiny, sparkly, useless objects, if you ask me it's all pretty frickin' dumb. But the thing I hate most of all are PROPOSALS ON THE JUMBOTRON AT SPORTING EVENTS. And that is why I love these people.

After a childhood that included captivity in a Japanese prison camp, J. G. Ballard developed a keen eye for those forces, present in all our all-too-modern lives,
that would drive us to complete insanity if left unopposed. In his books, people let those same forces work their way through themselves
ever so gradually, and leave us wanting our mommies.
His most recent title,
Millennium People is about the coming revolution and the
people who will make it happen. Read the interview I linked to, and be enlightened. And stock up on non-perishables, because for once, his ideas are a little too plausible.

The GLBTQ (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning) Movement has come along way in the last 30 years, from the historic Stonewall Rebellion of the late 1960's, to the highly controversial Dont ask Dont Tell policy of the mid nighnties. However it would appear that it still has some big hurdles to concur. One such hurdle being the state of Florida.

Sure, some things about Canadia are pretty cool. They've decriminalized pot, if that's your thing. They legally respect and recognize gay marriage, if that's your thing. And they don't have George W. Bush. But not everything about our neighbors to the North are quite so rosey.
Police in Canadia can be just as awful as police down here in the lower 48. Racism, violence, and just plain stupidity are as commonplace in Toronto as they are in Toledo. Police are only human, and humans can oftentimes do fucked up stuff to one another. Police, though, are generally able to do this within the context of making their precinct a safer place. Safe from whom? That's the question.
The question, though, won't be answered here, for the scope of this piece isn't to help solve the age-old problem of those-with-power-vs.-those-without. It's to merely point out some of the follies that Canadian poilce have commited recently. To be fair to the rest of Canadia, it should be mentioned that these police are all from Toronto.

Gay Sex Laws vs. Polygamy Laws

Many pundits will be bickering for the next year on the pros and cons of what will most likely be one of the hot buttons in the coming year's presidential elections -- gay marriage. The great state of Massachusetts recently made history when it's supreme court ruled that the ban on same-sex marriages in the statewas a violation of the state's constitution because it cast homosexuals as "second-class citizens". This ruling followed quickly on the heels of the national Supreme Court's recent ruling which overturned a Texas state-wide ban on sodomy as also being unconstitutional. While these are definately victories for gay rights supporters and potential lightning rods for next years elections, it may open up other unexpected cans of worms, like the case of the man from Utah that claims the ruling on the Texas case applies to his convictions of polygamy. Really.

Recently, there's been a lot of talk on this site about religion, the separation of church and state, and religion in the government.
I think it's time we step back a bit and see what it is that religion has to offer our society and our day to day lives. There's everything from working to control a woman's body, loving their fellow man, and even asking God to dabble in the judiciary.
Sometimes, though, it's not all fun and games. Sometimes, people's slavish devotion to superstition kills little autistic boys.
